Amethyst, the stone for February. (As adopted by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912)
Amethyst derives from amethystos (with an accent on the) which is Greek for "not intoxicated".
The pictured story above is from the poem "L'Amethyste, ou les Amours de Bacchus et d'Amethyste" by Remy Belleau (1528–1577) which may have been based on the Egyptian's use for the stone.
Leonardo Da Vinci claimed amethyst could "dissipate evil thoughts and quicken the intelligence."
In Tibet, amethyst is regarded a sacred gemstone.
Used by practitioners of the craft for:
strengthening the mind (memory, meditation, eg.)
Elemental Ruler: Water
Zodiac Affinities: Pisces / Aquarius
